The Mill Springs
Battlefield Visitor Center & Museum was established November 4,
2006 with the purpose of acquiring and distributing knowledge, and to
preserve and exhibit objects, illustrating the history and importance
of the Battle of Mill Springs and the preservation of battlefield
land.
The
building is located beside the Mill Springs National Cemetery, itself
an historic site, on the northernmost edge of the Battlefield. The
southern exposure from the plaza allows the visitor to look toward the
Battlefield, across what would have been the camps of the Union
troops. The building was intentionally situated on this spot so that
it would not impact or desecrate known Battlefield. The facility has
sixty parking places and room for two buses. It is handicapped
accessible.
HOURS
Monday
– Sunday 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
The facility
consists of a central foyer with a workstation for greeters to sit and
welcome the visitor. This location serves as a "command
center" for the entire building. Here you can obtain information
about the Battlefield, where to start the driving tour, special events
that are planned and directions for your visit to the Center. Off of
the foyer are the restrooms, the community room, library, legacy room,
the interpretative hall, and the gift shop.
The community room is the theatre for
the showing of our professionally produced video called "The
Battle of Mill Springs". This eighteen minute presentation sets
the stage for the first time visitors' experience of the Battlefield.
The community room is also available for rent by individuals or groups
needing a location for meetings, luncheons or other gatherings.
Professor Ewald Kockritz who is now
deceased, of the University of Florida, donated his extensive
collection of books and research materials to the Association. That
collection and other books will be housed in our research library at
the building. Anyone interested in information about the Civil War is
invited to use the facility. We also have collections of letters,
diary entries and other information from soldiers who were in the
Battle. We invite anyone with letters, diaries or similar material to
provide us with the originals or copies for our records.
The interpretative hall is completed and may be viewed and visited. It is
now the home of Combat On the Cumberland an exhibit about the Battle of Mill Springs.
Education, interpretation and preservation in a permanent format
will be the order of the day.

The legacy hall is the site of the
central theme and exposition of the Battle of Mill Springs. This room
is designed to be the most secure location in our facility. A plan has
been presented and approved by the Board which will emphasize those
goals in a personal, hands-on, relevant and respectful way. We are
still seeking funding to make this dream a reality. There are still
things to see and touch in our facility so come and enjoy.
The
gift shop is fully stocked with a variety of items from books,
souvenirs and clothing to mementos made from actual pieces of the
Zollie Tree. We hope that anyone that is considering a gift for a
special occasion will shop in our store. All items are reasonably
priced and proceeds are used to help support the Visitors Center.
Remember that Association members are entitled to a fifteen percent
(15%) discount on all items purchased. We are now equipped to take
credit cards.
