Battle
Scenarios
The battle action will be varied
and involve all three branches. The scenarios will replicate the
action of January 19, 1862, when 4,000 Union troops under
General George H. Thomas clashed with 4,000 Confederate troops
under Generals George B. Crittenden and Felix K. Zollicoffer
near the hamlet of Logan’s Crossroads (now Nancy, KY); in what
became known as the Battle of Mill Springs or Fishing Creek.
Saturday’s battle plans includes a morning cavalry and
artillery action replicating the Battle of Dutton’s Hill; with
afternoon action focused on the Fight for the Cornfield where
the 2nd Minnesota, 10th Indiana, and 4th Kentucky Infantry (US)
were pitted against the 15th Mississippi and 20th and 28th
Tennessee Infantry Regiments. At dawn Sunday, the armies will
relive the Fight in the Fog with the Sunday afternoon action
concluding with the Fight for the Split Rail Fence with the 19th
Tennessee’s advance against the 10th Indiana and the 9th Ohio
Infantry Regiments. Gen. Zollicoffer was killed at the battle of
Mill Springs, becoming the first Confederate General to be
killed in the West. We will replicate that historic event as a
special vignette for the public. This was the first significant
Union victory of the Civil War, and put all of Eastern Kentucky
in Union control. Combined with the losses of Forts Henry and
Donelson less than a month later, the Confederate evacuation of
Kentucky and central Tennessee followed, opening up Tennessee to
Federal invasion and setting the stage for the Battle of Shiloh.
This will be a unique opportunity, as scripted scenarios
replicate the exact troop movements made and on the original
ground. Saturday afternoon’s battle will duplicate the
original battle and will last approximately 2 hours. During the
original battle, both sides ran out of ammunition twice. Bring
plenty of ammo.
